Bartolomé Island

Pinnacle Rock and the twin beaches of Bartolomé Island, Galápagos

Overview

A small, young volcanic islet beside Santiago, Bartolomé is best known for one of the most photographed views in the Galápagos: the jagged volcanic spire of Pinnacle Rock overlooking two crescent beaches.

Geology & Formation

A young, largely barren volcanic cone dotted with spatter cones and very little vegetation.

Landscape

Reddish and black volcanic terrain leading up to a summit viewpoint above Pinnacle Rock.

Wildlife You May Encounter

Galápagos penguins are regularly seen swimming near Pinnacle Rock, making Bartolomé one of the most reliable places in the islands to see this equatorial penguin species. Marine iguanas and Sally Lightfoot crabs are common along the shore.

Visitor Sites

The boardwalk trail to the summit viewpoint, and snorkeling around Pinnacle Rock itself.

Naturalist Insight

Bartolomé’s summit is one of the few places on Earth where a penguin species can be seen from land this close to the equator — a direct, visible result of the cold Cromwell Current that makes the Galápagos far cooler underwater than its latitude would suggest.
